Special Exhibition Herat Glass at Gustav 2026

A 2,700-year-old craft finds its way to Dornbirn.
At Gustav 2026, the special exhibition Herat Glass showcases traditionally mouth-blown unique pieces from Afghanistan. The cultural project preserves the endangered glassblowing craft from extinction and directly supports artisan families on site.

Millennia-old craft tradition revived
In the Afghan region of Herat, the art of glassblowing has a history spanning over 2,700 years. After severe earthquakes and prolonged crises, this traditional craft was on the brink of extinction. The special exhibition at Gustav brings this fascinating craft into the spotlight.
The artisans create delicate vases, carafes, drinking glasses, and fine objects on site from resource-saving recycled glass. They work entirely without machines or pre-made molds over an open clay fire. Due to the free shaping and traditional melting process, each piece differs in structure and form.

Unique aesthetics and lively surfaces

The handcrafted glass objects impress with their distinctive characteristics. Small air bubbles in the material and traditional colors like azure blue, shimmering green, or amber give the pieces a unique appearance. Light refracts on the slightly irregular surfaces, giving each object its own dynamic. The collection thus combines historic manufacturing techniques with timeless table and home culture.

Help for self-help and preservation of cultural heritage

Behind the project is an initiative for economic self-help. Stefan Grabher from the Vorarlberg textile company Mary Rose launched the rescue project together with ZEIT journalist Wolfgang Bauer. The funding of new furnaces and tools provides the glassblowing families in Herat with a secure livelihood and ensures the continuation of this intangible cultural heritage.
Visitors to Gustav can experience the glass objects up close from October 16 to 18, 2026, at Messequartier Dornbirn and gain insights into the stories behind the pieces.
